Tata Steel UK is replacing blast furnace steelmaking at Port Talbot with an electric arc furnace and mills programme worth £1.25bn, funded jointly with the UK Government. Planning approval came in February 2025 and ground was broken in July 2025, with Sir Robert McAlpine as main contractor. Keller is installing more than 1,350 piles, and in September 2026 six piling rigs were working across the site. The furnace will be fed through a new 275kV National Grid substation.
McAlpine expects more than 400 specialist subcontractors on the job. Tata has opened an on-site contractor village for up to 1,100 staff and contractors at peak, so demand off site comes mostly from subcontractor, specialist and commissioning crews. Start-up was targeted for the end of 2027, but the BBC reported in June 2026 that a grid connection problem could delay it by up to eight months, and Keller now gives 2028. Crews base in Port Talbot, Neath, Swansea and Bridgend.
