RFI is building a new railway bypass around Trento, about 13km of line almost entirely underground, with a twin bore tunnel of around 10.5km. It is part of the plan to add two tracks to the Fortezza to Verona line, the southern approach to the Brenner Base Tunnel. Consorzio Tridentum, led by Webuild with Ghella, Collina Lavori and Sei Overseas, won the €934m contract, works began in March 2023, and the total cost is now put at about €1.3bn.
The cutting head of the first tunnel boring machine was installed in late September 2026, the second machine was due to be assembled from November, and the north portal works were handed over the same month. Each machine runs around the clock with four crews of 20. Completion has slipped to 2030 at the earliest and the consortium is seeking to renegotiate costs. The contractor's camps take part of the workforce, so engineers, subcontractors and longer stays base in Trento, Lavis, Pergine Valsugana and Rovereto.
