SuedOstLink is a direct current underground cable of about 540 km from Wolmirstedt in Saxony-Anhalt to Isar in Bavaria. TenneT is building the southern converter station between the A92 motorway and the shut-down Isar 2 nuclear plant, at Ohu in the municipality of Essenbach, next to Niederaichbach in Landkreis Landshut. The link carries 4 GW through two converter units. All seven transformers for the first converter were in place by July 2025, work on the second converter was starting, and the line had all its planning approvals that month with construction running in every section.
TenneT plans to commission the first part of the line in 2027. In January 2026 it ended its contract on cable section C2 in the Upper Palatinate, which was about 150 days behind, and said the 2027 target still stands. Niederaichbach had 4,220 residents in March 2026, so converter, electrical and commissioning crews base in Essenbach, Wörth an der Isar, Landshut and Dingolfing.
