Equinor is building Snøhvit Future, which adds onshore compression and electrification to Hammerfest LNG on Melkøya island. The work includes a new substation at Melkøya, a subsea cable to the island and a 3.2 km cable tunnel from Meland to Hyggevatn, while Statnett builds a substation at Hyggevatn and a 54 km power line from Skaidi. The plan was approved in August 2023, and in October 2026 Equinor raised the cost estimate to NOK 26.5bn and kept the timetable of onshore compression in 2029 and electrification in 2030.
The project was well over halfway complete in March 2026, and by July Statnett's line was about halfway, with 130 foundations and 79 masts in place and a busier phase ahead. NRK reported 1,700 workers from 57 companies on the power build-out in May 2025. The project has been contested in the Storting and costs have roughly doubled since 2022. Hammerfest already relies on temporary worker villages, including a 423 bed village built by Adapteo, so crews base in Hammerfest, Kvalsund and Skaidi, with Alta further south.
