Red Eléctrica is building Salto de Chira, a 200MW pumped storage hydro plant with 3.5GWh of storage between the Chira and Soria reservoirs in the south of Gran Canaria, together with the island's water authority. The scheme includes a seawater desalination plant and marine works. Construction started in February 2022, and the budget is now about €590m, which Canarias7 called the most expensive public works ever built in the islands.
About 500 people were working on the project in June 2026, when it was more than 60% complete with commissioning expected in 2028. The last stage is fitting out the powerhouse and testing the turbines. One court case is still pending, but works continue. The reservoir villages are tiny and rents in Mogán and San Bartolomé de Tirajana are pushed up by tourist lets and second homes, so crews base in Mogán, Arguineguín, Maspalomas and Vecindario.
