RFI is building the Napoli-Bari high-speed and high-capacity railway, and two lots run through Irpinia in Campania. The Apice to Hirpinia lot is 18.7 km long with about 13 km in tunnel, which RFI valued at about €690m. The Hirpinia to Orsara lot, about 28 km towards Puglia, was awarded to a Webuild-led consortium for €1.075bn in 2021. The consortium leased the Ariano Irpino exhibition centre as its headquarters.
The 6.5 km Rocchetta tunnel broke through in May 2026, and RFI's chief executive gave 2029 as the estimated completion, with excavation of the 4.4 km Melito tunnel starting that summer. In October 2026 the last tunnel on the Apice to Hirpinia lot was being excavated. The contractor runs a base camp at Grottaminarda for about a hundred workers, so outside demand comes mainly from technicians and subcontractor crews, who base in Ariano Irpino, Grottaminarda, Benevento and Avellino.
