Frutigen, Bernese Oberland. BLS puts the full Lötschberg Base Tunnel expansion at about CHF 1.7bn.

BLS is expanding the 35 km Lötschberg Base Tunnel between Frutigen in the Bernese Oberland and Raron in Valais, where part of the tunnel was built with a single track. The partial expansion became final in May 2026 when the Federal Supreme Court rejected the last appeal, and construction officially started in early July 2026, with an information centre opening at Frutigen station. Advance works, including the Kandertal service gallery and the Mitholz access gallery, were completed in October 2026.

In August 2026 BLS put plans for the full double track expansion on public display, at about CHF 1.7bn, with roughly 7 km of tunnel still to excavate from the Frutigen side and a new emergency stop at Mitholz. Approval of the full expansion is still pending. The main civil works tender asks for site set up from autumn 2027, construction from early 2028 and completion by the end of 2035.
