Heide
hosts one of Europe's first multiterminal grid hubs

Heide, Schleswig-Holstein. Construction of the HeideHub grid hub started in January 2026.
Heide, Schleswig-Holstein. Construction of the HeideHub grid hub started in January 2026.

TenneT, Amprion, 50Hertz and SH Netz broke ground on HeideHub on 21 January 2026, next to the existing Heide/West substation in the municipalities of Wöhrden and Lieth. The 56 ha site combines a TenneT direct current switching station and substation with Amprion's Korridor B converter, the northern end of a 525 kV, 4 GW direct current line. The hub will take up to 4 GW from the LanWin2 and LanWin3 offshore links, with operation planned from 2030.

Hemmingstedt, on the B5 between Heide and Meldorf, had 2,827 residents in June 2025. Housing near Heide was already tight enough in January 2025 for the town council to approve a temporary village for up to 850 construction workers for the Northvolt battery plant, a project that has since slowed sharply. Crews base in Heide, Hemmingstedt, Meldorf and Büsum.
