Terna's Adriatic Link is a 1,000MW direct current connection between Abruzzo and the Marche, about 250km long with 210km under the sea, and an investment of about €1.3bn. It was authorised in January 2024. The Abruzzo converter station is being built next to the existing Villanova substation at Cepagatti, with the other end at Fano. A joint venture of Siemens Energy, FATA, Impresa Manca and Impresa Pizzulo holds the contract for both stations, and Pizzulo carries out the civil works at Cepagatti.
Works on the Abruzzo side started in May 2025, with the onshore cable route leaving from the Villanova station towards the coast, and Terna targets entry into service in 2029. The start date of the Cepagatti station itself has not been published. Cepagatti has about 11,000 residents across several villages, and crews base in Cepagatti, Chieti, Spoltore and Pescara.
