Vulcan Energy's Phase One Lionheart project combines geothermal wells and lithium extraction in the Upper Rhine Valley. The well field and lithium extraction plant are at Landau in der Pfalz, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the lithium chemicals plant is about 150 km away at Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt. The €2.2bn financing package includes €250m from the European Investment Bank, and the plan is 24,000 tonnes a year of lithium hydroxide plus 275 GWh of power and 560 GWh of heat a year.
Financing was agreed in December 2025, ground was broken at the Landau extraction plant in late 2025 and financial close came in May 2026. By the second quarter of 2026 the sixth well had been drilled and the seventh started, with the next well pad due in the fourth quarter and further well sites out to tender. Commercial production is targeted for 2028. Landau had 48,209 residents at the end of 2024 and only 137 new homes were built there that year, so drilling and plant crews base in Landau, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Speyer and Karlsruhe.
