Terna is building the west branch of the Tyrrhenian Link, a 1,000 MW, 500 kV direct current connection between Sicily and Sardinia. Terna has finished laying the subsea cable for the west branch.
Works were suspended in June 2025 after road damage, local protests and archaeological checks, then resumed. In June 2026 local press reported land works moving fast from Quartu to Settimo, with the link due in 2030, and in September 2026 the metropolitan city of Cagliari met Terna and the councils to plan work sites and traffic. Selargius sits inside the Cagliari metropolitan area, so crews base in Selargius, Quartu Sant'Elena, Monserrato and Cagliari.
