Samsung SDI is expanding its second battery cell plant at Göd, Pest county, just north of Budapest. The investment is HUF 955bn, about €2.37bn, with HUF 133bn of Hungarian state aid, and the permit raised cell production capacity to 157,000 tonnes a year. Work on the expansion began in early 2024 and was reported as ongoing in November 2025.
A lower court invalidated the plant's environmental permit in October 2025 after years of resident lawsuits. Hungary's supreme court overturned that ruling in February 2026 and the plant was cleared to run at full capacity in June 2026, but local opposition continues. Construction progress in 2026 has not been published. In 2020 most of the plant's staff came from outside Göd, with Vác and Dunakeszi the main local commuter towns, so crews base in Göd, Vác, Dunakeszi and north Budapest.
