RFI is building a new high-capacity railway between Palermo and Catania across central Sicily. Lot 4A, from Caltanissetta Xirbi to Nuova Enna, is about 27 km long and about 20 km of it runs in tunnel, mostly bored by TBM, with viaducts and station works. Webuild is the contractor and Sicilian press puts the lot at almost €1.5bn. The site was handed over in June 2026 after the final design was approved.
Local press counted about 110 workers on Lot 4A in September 2026, up from about 80 in February, and a union official says completion before 2029 is not possible, with water supply and skilled labour shortages slowing the central lots. Two contractor base camps house part of the workforce, so outside demand comes mainly from specialist, tunnelling and subcontractor crews. Caltanissetta has about 58,000 to 60,000 residents and both provinces are losing population, so crews base in Enna, Pergusa and Caltanissetta.
