Energie AG Oberösterreich is building a 170 MW pumped storage power plant at Ebensee am Traunsee, with the powerhouse in a cavern inside the Sonnstein mountain, an upper reservoir in the Rumitzgraben valley and the intake in the Traunsee. At €451.3m it is the largest investment in the company's history. Construction started in October 2023, and the 460 m access tunnel reached the cavern in October 2024.
By September 2026 excavation of the 53 m long cavern was finished, concrete and steelwork were under way, Andritz Hydro had started installing the main turbine and generator components, and the upper reservoir dam was about 90% complete. Commissioning is now planned for the end of 2028, so the next two years bring mechanical, electrical and commissioning crews.
