Terna and the Tunisian utility STEG are building Elmed, a 600 MW, 500 kV direct current interconnector between Sicily and Cap Bon in Tunisia. The Italian environment ministry authorised the project in May 2024, and the EBRD put its cost at €920m, with a €307.6m EU grant. In June 2026 Terna, STEG and Hitachi Energy signed a €770m contract for both converter stations.
Terna has started moving more than 1,700 olive trees from the Partanna site, and the first project steering committee met in Tunis in September 2026. Completion is officially targeted for 2028, but Tunisia's secretary of state for the energy transition said in March 2026 that supply chain pressure could push it to 2030 or 2031. Partanna is a small inland town, so crews base across Partanna, Castelvetrano, Santa Ninfa and Mazara del Vallo.
