Port Polska, the state company behind the CPK programme, is building a 4.6 km, 14 m diameter high-speed rail tunnel under Łódź, from a launch chamber at Retkinia to Łódź Fabryczna station, with PORR as contractor. The tunnel is part of the Y line from Warsaw via the new airport to Łódź, Poznań and Wrocław. The chambers are built, and in October 2026 the 169 tonne main drive of the tunnel boring machine was in the Retkinia chamber for assembly, with boring planned for spring 2027. Work on evacuation chambers K6 and K5 started in spring and August 2026.
The tunnel is due to open in 2029 and the Warsaw to Łódź line in 2032. Port Polska is tendering the open line sections, including the 11 km Brzeziny to Łódź section, with construction outside the tunnel expected from around the turn of 2027 and 2028, although funding for the Y line is not fully secured. Tunnelling runs on long rotations, and teams base in Łódź, Zgierz, Pabianice and Brzeziny.
