SSEN Transmission is building the Banniskirk Hub near Spittal and Halkirk in Caithness, a 400 kV substation and HVDC converter station. It connects the 2 GW, 203 km Spittal to Peterhead subsea link, where construction started in April 2026 and the compounds at both ends were working by October 2026. The hub received planning consent in November 2025, and ground investigation, blasting and site set-up have been under way since late August 2026.

The planned Spittal to Loch Buidhe to Beauly 400 kV overhead line is at a public inquiry from 24 November to 14 December 2026, so its timing is open. Housing is already a known pinch point. A proposed workers' village of about 500 beds at Pennyland Farm in Thurso is targeted for summer 2027, and until then crews base in Thurso, Halkirk and Wick.
